Facts
- Roses last from 8 to 18 days and removing thorns is not advisable as it leaves gashes which are prone to bacterial infection. (Obviously there are occasions when the stems have to be nipped - handties for example).
- Roses are generally prone to bacteria, which reduces there cut life, so always use fresh water, a clean vase and flower food, being careful to remove foliage below water level.
- Roses are also ethylene sensitive so keep them away from fruit which give of this gas.
- Crushing the stems will reduce the life of the flower, so use a long slanting cut instead.
- Frequent misting and a cool environment help keep roses fresh but if they wilt, the best way to revive them is to recut their stems under water and standing them up, in hot water for a couple of hours.
Rose Myth
Romans believed white roses grew where the tears of Venus fell, as she mourned the loss of Adonis. Her son Cupid stung by a bee, shot arrows in the rose garden which became thorns. Venus pricked her foot on the thorn, and the droplets of blood dyed the roses red.
Rose Legend
According to Greek legend, the rose was created by Chloris, goddess of flowers, from a nymph found one day in a wood. Aphrodite, goddess of love, gave beauty; Dionysus, god of wine, added a sweet scent; and the three Graces gave charm, brightness and joy. Then Zephyr blew away the clouds so Apollo cloud shine and made the flower bloom. Thus the rose was born.
